What you'll find here

Practical cleaning advice from a team that does this every day

Our blog is where we share what we've learned over thousands of cleanings across the western Chicago suburbs — the products that actually work, the shortcuts that don't, the seasonal routines worth your time, and the local context (Illinois winters, lake-effect humidity, old-home quirks) that generic cleaning advice from the internet usually misses.

Cleaning tips and how-to guides

Real, tested techniques for common problems: removing hard-water stains on glass shower doors, getting pet hair out of upholstery, deodorizing a garbage disposal, restoring grout without bleach, dealing with crayon on painted walls, and the small kitchen rituals that prevent buildup before it happens. We focus on methods that use products you already own — and we'll tell you when a problem genuinely needs a specialist instead.

Seasonal checklists for Illinois homes

A Chicago-area home goes through four distinct cleaning seasons: spring deep-reset after winter, summer maintenance with windows open, fall pre-holiday prep, and the long winter when salt, slush, and forced-air heat fight your floors. We publish checklists for each season tuned to the specific challenges of homes in DuPage and Will County — including which exterior tasks are worth doing yourself and which are better left for spring.

Local guides for the western suburbs

Neighborhood-specific posts about cleaning challenges unique to communities we serve: historic homes in Hinsdale with original plaster and lath, lake-adjacent humidity in certain Naperville subdivisions, the dust patterns common in newer Plainfield builds, and what to expect when cleaning an Oak Brook townhome with HOA-required entry protocols. We write these because the questions keep coming up and there's no one else writing them.

Move-in, move-out, and life-event prep

Practical guides for the big transitions: how to clean an apartment so you actually get your full deposit back, how to prepare a home for listing photos that pop, what to clean (and what to skip) before a baby arrives, and how to reset a home after a long illness or hospital stay. These posts pull from the checklists our own teams use on real jobs.

Honest reviews of cleaning products and tools

We use a lot of cleaning products. When something genuinely works, we'll say so. When a viral TikTok cleaning hack damages the surface it's supposed to clean, we'll say that too. No affiliate links, no sponsorships — just honest takes from people who clean homes professionally for a living.

Have a topic you'd like us to cover?

Email info@crystalbroom.net with the question and we'll add it to the editorial queue. If it's a problem you have, it's almost certainly one many other readers have too.

Why we publish this stuff (when we could just be cleaning)

Honestly, because we get tired of seeing bad cleaning advice rank on Google. Most cleaning content online is written by people who have never cleaned a home professionally — listicles assembled from other listicles, sponsored by whichever product is paying that week. We clean roughly a hundred homes a week across DuPage and Will County. We see what actually works, what damages surfaces, what the manufacturers won't tell you, and what saves real money. The blog is our way of putting that into a form you can use even if you never hire us.

How often we publish, and how to follow along

We publish one to two articles a month — not daily, not on a schedule we have to fake to feed an algorithm. When something is genuinely useful, we write about it. The best way to follow along is to bookmark this page or check back seasonally. We don't run a newsletter (yet), and we don't sell email addresses to anyone — your inbox is safe.

Use anything you find here, no attribution needed

Take our checklists, copy our techniques, share posts with friends and neighbors. The point of writing this stuff is for it to be useful, not to gate it. If a particular article helped you, the kindest thing you can do is leave us a Google review or tell someone about Crystal Broom Cleaning. That's the only payment we ever ask for.
