Can Professional House Cleaning Actually Reduce Fall Risk at Home? What I've Seen Firsthand
For people with limited mobility, a cluttered or dusty home can be a real safety concern. Crystal Broom's Sigita shares what she's seen in real homes — and how regular cleaning can actually reduce fall risk.

This isn't something I expected to be writing about when I started Crystal Broom Cleaning. I thought I was in the business of making homes look nice.
What I've learned over the years is that for some of my clients — especially those with limited mobility or balance concerns — cleaning is less about aesthetics and more about safety.
So let me share what I've actually seen, because I think this conversation deserves more than a generic checklist.
The Connection Between Cleaning and Fall Risk Is Real
For people with limited mobility — whether from age, injury, chronic illness, or disability — falls at home are one of the most serious everyday risks. And while most people think about grab bars or rugs when they think about fall prevention, the role of regular cleaning is something that rarely comes up.
Here's what I've noticed walking into homes across Naperville, Elmhurst, Oak Brook, and Westmont: it's often the small stuff that becomes the hazard.
A floor that hasn't been mopped in a few weeks gets subtly sticky or slippery in spots. Clutter that accumulates near walkways because someone can't bend down easily to pick things up. Rugs that have shifted and curled at the edges because they haven't been vacuumed and repositioned. Bathroom floors where moisture and residue build up because scrubbing on hands and knees isn't possible anymore.
None of these things announce themselves as dangerous. They're just the slow accumulation of what happens when keeping up with cleaning is hard.
What Regular Cleaning Actually Addresses
I want to be specific here rather than vague, because I think specificity is what actually helps people make decisions.
On our recurring cleaning checklist, every visit includes vacuuming and mopping all floors — kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas. That alone matters a lot. Clean, dry floors with no buildup are safer floors.
We also vacuum rugs, which catches the debris that makes surfaces uneven and repositions anything that has shifted.
In bathrooms, we clean tubs and showers, mop floors, and wipe down the areas where moisture collects and where residue builds up over time. A bathroom floor that gets properly cleaned regularly is meaningfully different — in both feel and safety — from one that's only been surface-wiped.
In kitchens, we clean the floors and also the surfaces around where people spend time cooking and preparing food. Grease and spills that don't get fully cleaned become slipping hazards, especially on tile or hardwood.
Now, I want to be clear: we are not a medical service. We are not fall-prevention specialists. But clean, clear, dry floors in a home where someone has balance concerns is genuinely better than floors that aren't. That I have seen.
A Moment That Has Stayed With Me
A few years ago we started cleaning for a woman in Hinsdale who has MS. She'd been managing on her own as long as she could, and by the time she called us, she told me she'd started avoiding her bathroom at night because the floor felt slippery and she was scared.
Not a dramatic story — just a real one.
After a few recurring cleans, she told me she didn't feel that way anymore. She said she knew it was just a clean floor, but it made her feel safer in her own home.
That's not something I put on a flyer. But it's something I think about a lot.
What Cleaning Can't Do
I want to be honest here too. Professional cleaning is not a substitute for physical modifications to a home — grab bars, non-slip mats in the shower, proper lighting, or advice from an occupational therapist.
If fall risk is a serious concern for you or someone you love in Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Burr Ridge, or anywhere else, please talk to a healthcare provider about a real home safety evaluation.
What we can do is make sure that the baseline cleanliness of floors, bathrooms, and kitchens is consistently maintained — taking one layer of risk off the table and one significant task off someone's plate.
How We Work With Clients Who Have Mobility Challenges
Every home is different, and I take that seriously.
When a new client has limited mobility or a disability, I want to understand what matters most to them. Are there specific areas they're most concerned about? Are there parts of their home they can manage themselves and parts they can't? Is there a caregiver or family member who's usually present, or do they need us to work independently?
We are insured and background-checked. Every clean comes with a checklist so you know exactly what was done. And if something isn't right, let us know within 24 hours and we'll come back to make it right.
If this sounds like something that could help you or someone in your family, I'd be glad to talk it through. You can book here or call 331-244-1554.
We serve Naperville, Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Elmhurst, Westmont, Downers Grove, and communities throughout DuPage and Will County.
